SDCC DAY TWO VERTIGO REPORT
by Jennifer Contino (The Pulse)
Sandman, Swamp Thing, Human
Target, Sgt. Rock, Fables,
and more! Vertigo just turned ten this
year and has lots of plans to make their birthday memorable.
See which series are joining the lineup, check out which
characters will be immortalized first on a bust, find out
which “classic” characters are making a return,
and all kinds of other Vertigo news!
The Sandman: Endless Nights makes its debut
this September and features seven new Sandman related stories
by some fantastic creators. This stunning hardcover is written
by Neil Gaiman with art by Milo Manara, who illustrates Desire;
Bill Sienkiewicz drawing Delirium; P. Craig Russell drawing
Death; Barron Storey on Despair; Frank Quitely illustrating
Destiny; Glenn Fabry on Destruction, and Miguelanxo Prado,
who draws the Sandman. Also, to help herald this edition,
Frank Quitely created an Endless Nights retail poster which
will be available from DC Direct. The PULSE interviewed Karen
Berger about this and other upcoming Vertigo projects.
Also coming from DC Direct is a series of mini busts featuring
the Vertigo cast. The first up is Merv Pumpkinhead. He’s
based on a design by Kevin Nowlan and sculpted by Barsom.
Merv is in stores in September.
Are the siblings Duplicity and Deceit really lost members
of the Endless? That’s what readers will have to figure
out in Lucifer beginning with September’s issue 43.
The diabolical duo are causing problems in Silver City.
A series of interlinked stand-alone stories begin soon in
the pages of Hellblazer courtesy of Mike Carey, Marcelo Frusin,
and Doug Alexander Gregory. First up John Constantine crosses
the world in search of the mysterious Shadow Dog.
One of the biggest announcements was that Neil Gaiman was
going to be co-writing The Books of Magic with Si Spencer.
Spencer is known for his television work on EastEnders and
Grange Hill. They co-write beginning in early 2004 with Dean
Ormston joining them for the art chores.
THE LOSERS continue to hunt the man who ordered their death,
wreaking havoc along the way. Writer Andy Diggle and artist
Jock unleash this team of loose cannons as they home in those
responsible for their supposed deaths… Diggle spoke
with us about this project. See why this version of the Losers
is decidedly different from those WW2 heroes.
You can’t keep a good swamp creature down … or
his daughter! Andy Diggle isn’t just playing with the
classic Losers, he’s also taking a stab at the Swamp
Thing with a new six-part limited series, Swamp
Thing: Bad Seed. John Constantine must intervene
when Sargon the Sorceror dupes Tefe into fighting her dear
old dad. Will Constantine be able to stop this family feud
before all humanity suffers?
Did you know that Joe Kubert was a fan of Brian Azzarello’s
work and wanted to create a story with him? Azzarello felt
the same way as Kubert and the result of that mutual admiration
is the upcoming SGT Rock: Between Heaven and A Hard
Place. Brian Azzarello spoke with THE PULSE about
this and other projects. Kubert wanted to work with Azzarello
on this project, see how that made the writer feel.
A new six issue story arc is beginning in 100 Bullets this
October. Jack and Mikey, the duo last seen in issue # 22,
are back and headed on a road trip. However it’s not
a smooth road! Azzarello and Eduardo Risso are your map makers
starting in issue 47.
Besides the Swamp Thing, another character from the past
is making a reappearance in the present, The Human
Target. Christopher Chance begins his new adventures
this August. Karen Berger and Javier Pulido talked with THE
PULSE about this project.
The critically-acclaimed series Y: THE LAST MAN,
written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Pia Guerra and José Marzan,
Jr., continues. The current story arc, "One Small Step," raises
the question of whether Yorick Brown is the last man on Earth… or
in the entire solar system? And watch for a two-issue story
beginning in October's issue 16 illustrated by Concrete creator
Paul Chadwick.
This summer, Bigby Wolf and Snow White are lost in the woods
and on the run from a sniper in FABLES,
by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha. And
in September, watch for FABLES: THE LAST CASTLE,
written by Willingham with art by P. Craig Russell and Craig
Hamilton. The PULSE caught up with writer Bill Willingham
to chat about what’s coming up for the land of Fables.
What happens when a crime family of vampires goes on a rampage?
I’m not sure, but in Bite Club, a
new monthly series by Howard Chaykin, David Tischman, and
David Hahn makes its debut in 2004.
In IT’S A BIRD…, writer Steven T. Seagle and
artist Teddy Kristiansen look at the symbolic meaning of
the Man of Steel. This fully painted graphic novel is scheduled
to reach stores in 2004.
Get ready to get VERTICAL, a 64-page Special by written
by Steven T. Seagle and illustrated by Michael Allred & Phillip
Bond that's just 4 inches wide and 22-inches tall. It's the
story of Brando Bale — a young man covered with cuts,
stitches and bruises from his many leaps from high places
in an attempt to find God — and Zilly Kane — a
teenager who dreams of fame and finds Brando instead.
