AN ATHENA VOLTAIRE: FLIGHT OF THE FALCON PREVIEW
by Jennifer Contino (Pulse)
Creator Steve Bryant has given THE PULSE a look inside the pages of Athena Voltaire: Flight of the Falcon # 1. The first issue is in stores now and we've got his thoughts on why this series shouldn't be missed.
I'm a lucky guy. I've spent the last three-and-a-half years drawing my dream project, Athena Voltaire. We launched initially as an online comic but are now transitioning to print, too, in a 5-issue limited series (Athena Voltaire: Flight of the Falcon) courtesy of Speakeasy Comics.
Why is AV my dream project? I get to draw pretty much everything that I want in this comic. Between our online run and print debut, I've handled locales as diverse as New York, French Morocco, Tibet, Germany, London, Transylvania, Peru, Arizona, Hong Kong, Burma and the Middle East. I've drawn monasteries, temples, ranches, castles and lost cities. Our heroine has thrown down against a yeti, werewolves, vampires, Nazis, Japanese Kempi-Ti agents and more. It's certainly an artist's dream!
The series is set in the 1930s, before every square inch of the world had been explored and mapped by satellite. The American West may have been tamed, but traditional cowboys still populated ranches. The Far East was still regarded as exotic. The world just seemed bigger.
As an illustrator, it's the ultimate playground. One day I'm drawing a cowboys fighting werewolves, the next it's Malay pirates taking on the S.S. And occult monsters always seem to be on the horizon.
While these elements may seem disparate, my co-creator on the series, Paul Daly, weaves it together so that it's the most natural thing in the world. I'm fortunate to be able to work with someone who makes it all seem so easy.
The color team of Chad Fidler and Kevin Volo take the artwork to the next level. I know that whenever I pass my line art along to these guys, they'll add in every ounce of atmosphere possible--a must in a book like this.
Athena Voltaire: Flight of the Falcon #1 hit comic shops on February 1st. I hope you join us for some pulp-style slam-bang action.
