Review:
Honestly, the only times that i enjoy Busiek's writing is when he is writing character-driven stories like Marvels and his Astro City series (unfortunately, his superhero work like avengers and even the mega event jla/avengers was too old school superhero comics for my taste).
Which is to say that I highly enjoyed his new cretor-owned series Arrowsmith.
Arrowsmith is about the growth of Fletcher Arrowsmith from an idealistic boy to a mature/experienced adult. It is about a young boy who dreams of being a "pilot" to fight in a war that he doesn't understand just for the glory of it.
Busiek has taken the peter parker/spiderman arch-type and set the story in an alternate, magic-based World War I time period. And in typical Busiek fashion, instead of making the book a dungeon & dragons swash-buckling adventure type story, he concentrates on showing the personal growth and loss of Fletcher Arrowsmith as well as the many tragedies/ugliness of war. Not too give an impression that the book is full of talking heads, Busiek sprinkles the story with enough action to satisty those Micahel Bay-movie fanatics. Plus, Busiek has included enough new deas for using magic that makes you say "keeewl!!!".
Aside from the top notch story, the book also boasts the stunning art of Mr. Carlos Pacheco who has beautifully brought the magical world of Arrowsmith to life.
I really can't praise enough the amount of detail and beauty of Pacheco's rendering of Fletcher's world.
So i you like Astro City, Ultimate Spiderman or the tv mini-series Band of Brothers, you should try this book....=)
