With the live-action movie in the horizon
by the great Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon),
Marvel comics is prepping its comics counterpart for
the surge of interested new readers that will
flood the comic shops/bookstores.
And there’s no better book to start reading
about the big green guy other than this thick big hardcover
which collects the first nine issues of Bruce Jones
and the highly controversial 4 issue mini-series of
Brian Azzarello.
In the first part of the book, Dr. Bruce Banner is
running from the authorities because a certain alter
ego of his has accidentally killed a child during one
of his rampage…or did he? With a number of unknown
government groups looking for the Hulk, Dr. Banner
can only trust an enigmatic Mr. Blue who is helping
him evade the authorities. But is Mr. Blue really a
friend or foe?
In the second part of the book, Brian Azzarello shows
us just how destructive the Hulk can be. With the great
Richard Corben doing the artwork, this is one of the
more memorable “Hulk smash!” stories ever
published.
Although the book seems a bit steep in price ($30),
you can NEVER go wrong with ANY marvel hardcovers because
aside from the fact it contains more than 250 pages
(which if you calculate it, the hardcover is much cheaper
if you buy the individual issues costing about $3 each),
it is also printed in a larger format than regular
comics, great thick-slick paper and the book extras
like an introduction by Bruce Jones and how they develop
a comic cover.
